In addition, the faculty of natural resources has a fisheries and marine science research center in Chamkhaleh beach and all of the M.A. and Ph.D. students’ theses are done in this research center. One of the other research centers of this faculty is the ecological garden of forestry group that conducts the practical and research training of students in Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

Fisheries Engineering

Due to the existence of Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, Oman Sea, and numerous water resources, Iran has the full production capacity for growing and developing the fisheries industry. The need of society to the aquatic white protein is achievable through hunting sea products and reproduction and fish growth. The existence of exportable resources such as ornamental fish, mollusks, and crustaceans in our country has increased the importance of this major. Therefore, education in this major while providing job opportunities can also create a brilliant future for the volunteers of this major.

Environmental Engineering

In this period, students gain sufficient information in the fields of basic science, basic knowledge about environmental issues, natural resources management, environmental pollution issues, and development and its effects on environment. The purpose of this major is to train specialists who can do activities for solving environmental problems, improve the life quality through obtaining the relevant knowledge, and work in the fields of research, evaluation, and planning for the logical use of environment and guide the executive affairs related to it.

Environmental department is active in environmental technology degrees (A.A.), non-continuous B.A. in environment, continuous B.A. and M.A. in environment in habitats and biodiversity fields. M.A. degree in environment in the field of environmental pollutions and Ph.D. degree in environment are in progress.

 Job Opportunities for Graduates

Due to the information that graduates have gained in different fields of environment, they will be able to do their responsibilities as the trainers of educational institutions, investigators in related research institutions, experts in executive organizations such as environmental protection agency, green space organization, forests and pastures organization, department of parks and municipalities, and the related private centers so that they can be successful in presenting environmental projects and monitoring their implementation.

The Number of Professors

Presently, this major has eight full-time faculty members in different degrees. One is Associate Professor, five are Assistant Professors, and two are lectures. Publication of two books, 100 articles in ISI and research-scientific journals, international, national, and regional conferences, three research projects out of the university, 10 research projects into the university, holding bird species exhibition in Guilan Province, and short time training periods are among the research activities of environmental department.

Environmental department has two labs called environment and air and water pollution. This department has environmental science association. It is also establishing the International Journal of Economy and Biodiversity.

  Forestry Engineering

  1. Forestry engineering is one of the majors of natural resources that aims at managing and protecting jungle and forest regions, and restoring them. Today this major has an important place in the world because forests are among the natural resources that can be used for human beings and environment provided that they are correctly managed. Today the need to wood has been more paid attention because this natural material is compatible with human. It can get its place more than the other metal products in the near future. Graduates of this major can work in natural resources offices, agricultural jihad, research centers of municipalities, and green spaces and they can also do the various activities in the private sections.
  1. Active Majors

The active majors of forestry engineering are as follows:

Forestry technology, continuous B.A. and non-continuous M.A. in forestry, M.A. in forestry in three fields called forest engineering,   forestry, silvics and the ecology of forest and farm grove.

  1. The Number of Professors

This major has now six full-time faculty members in different degrees with the university ranking of Assistant and Associate Professors.

  1. This major has two equipped labs that are unique in themselves in the natural resources universities of our country.
  • The measurement lab of qualitative and quantitative factors that cover the researches of silvics, forestry, road building, and utilization.
  • Specialized lab of eco-physiology and breeding of forest trees that is the most equipped lab in itself in country and presents valuable services in genetic researches.
  1. Research Center

This major has started an activity in wood agriculture and is examining a land of about one hectare for planting poplar and Paulownia trees. This educational department is establishing Iranian Journal of Forest Sciences and it will be achieved in the immediate future.

Keivan Marine Technology and Fisheries Sciences Research Center – Growth Centers and Knowledge-Based Companies

Keivan Marine Technology and Fisheries Sciences Research Center

The prestigious universities of the world always increase their quality and scientific validity through equipping and communicating with specialized research centers of university majors and consider it as an advantage of studying in that university. The cornerstone of research center of fisheries science and marine technology of Islamic Azad University of Lahijan, in this regard, has been constructed by the late Dr. Amin Keivan as one the geniuses and pioneers of fisheries sciences of country and the cooperation of full-time faculty members of fisheries engineering department as one of the eldest and the most well-known educational departments in a land of about two hectares in Chamkhaleh port in the neighborhood of Caspian sea littoral.

Basic aims of the mentioned project are to train students in B.A. and postgraduate studies in fisheries majors and the related sciences like environment, sea biology practically and familiarity with the modern information and applied technologies of this major so that they can be successful and producers in labor markets. The other aims of this major are to take the responsibility of researches pertinent to the mentioned sciences and reveal the scientific realities in international and national arena. In 1385, this place was approved as the research center according to the Research Deputy approval of Central Organization of Islamic Azad University. Since 1388, the process of completing installations was done more quickly. Then equipment were deployed and used and are updating based on needs.

This center is now equipped with six research and specialized labs:

  1. Ichthyology and aquatic animal health,
  2. aquatics biotechnology,
  3. Nutrition and aquatics production,
  4. Hydrology and water pollutions,
  5. Aquatics biochemical and physiological lab, and
  6. 6. Research lab of aquarium and ornamental fish.

Beside these labs, there are a workshop and fishing tools exhibition equipped with all hunting tools in the southern and northern parts of country and the Caviar fish growth section in the ground floor of the basic hall.

The objectives of this center are as follows:

  4. Encouragement of the private section of country for the sound investment in different majors of littoral fish and distant waters and the production of various fisheries products with different applications,
  5. The necessity of bio-technique explanation or its modification in growing and reproducing different aquatics species,
  6. The mastery of graduates over their specialized sciences and technologies,
  7. Preventing the outflow of foreign currency and students with the purpose of continuing their education in other countries, and
  8. Creating job opportunities for the skilled graduates in fisheries affairs.

Ichthyology Museum

This museum has collected different aquatics species of northern fish such as different groups of cultured fish and native fish in northern and southern waters and inland waters and also some specific species out of Iran and even ornamental species and different species of crustaceans and mollusks that have been provided by the experienced professors of Lahijan University in a complete set with standard rules. This is one of the valuable resources of this center for educating ichthyology sciences. It has also the visual attraction that attracts all visitors.

The Introduction of Growth Center and Technology Units of Lahijan University

In entrepreneurship literature, growth centers are among the technical infrastructures and are the frameworks that are established for the development or creation of small business. Growth center provides lab, technical, and office space accompanying with supportive services with the least expenditure for dynamic companies and it also provides latticework and some other subsidiary services for them.

In fact, growth center is a center that helps the dynamic units to be created and developed through providing facilities and services on the one hand and the necessary consultations in the law, management, and technical fields on the other hand. Islamic Azad University of Lahijan branch could earn the approval of growth center from the Central Organization of Islamic Azad University at the end of 1392. This center supports entrepreneurs who create and develop new professions and are active in the form of new creative units and their work leads to knowledge-based technology.
